Comprehensive sex education in schools is absolutely necessary. While sex education is a controversial issue to some due to religious or personal beliefs, it is much more important to view as a matter of public health and, more specifically, children’s health. An abstinence-only education does not provide the whole picture to students who may otherwise not have access to the appropriate information. In fact, abstinence-only programs clearly do not show a reduction of unwanted teenage pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections. Comprehensive sex education needs to be depoliticized and become a required part of our schools’ curriculum.
